But the representation of women at work, their career opportunities and pay equality are not subjects for a single day.

Around the world, companies are developing new HR policies to increase women’s participation in the workforce and support their career development. The reason is not only social responsibility. Research shows that inclusive organisations deliver higher performance and a stronger capacity for innovation.

McKinsey’s Women in the Workplace study, for example, finds that companies with greater representation of women in senior management perform more strongly financially.

Likewise, the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report underlines that gender equality in the workforce directly affects economic growth. Developing policies that support women employees is therefore no longer merely “a good approach” — it is seen as a strategic business decision.

Looking at what global companies actually do, three core HR policies stand out for strengthening women at work.

1. Transparent and fair pay management

Pay equality remains one of the most important items on the agenda for women at work.

According to OECD and World Economic Forum data, women worldwide can earn on average 15–20% less than men.

Closing that gap requires organisations to make pay management more transparent and more data-driven.

Practices becoming common in global companies:

Establishing pay bands by position

Running pay comparisons for the same role

Conducting regular pay equity analyses

Tying pay decisions to performance and role-based criteria

This approach matters not only for equality but for employee trust. When people see that pay decisions follow a systematic model, their trust in the organisation goes up.

2. Career development and leadership opportunities

One of the biggest barriers to women progressing at work is the “leadership gap” at middle management level.

According to McKinsey’s Women in the Workplace report, many organisations have a high share of women at entry level, yet that share falls sharply on the way up to senior management.

So organisations have started to invest more in:

Goal-based performance evaluation systems

Regular feedback mechanisms

Mentoring programmes

Leadership development programmes

Making performance processes data-driven and measurable in particular allows promotion decisions to be taken more objectively.

In short, career development is no longer a process left to a manager’s initiative; it is becoming an organisational process that is managed systematically.

3. Flexible and sustainable ways of working

Working models were among the fastest-changing topics in business after the pandemic. Hybrid work, flexible hours and employee-centred leave policies are reshaping the employee experience in modern organisations.

Research by the International Labour Organization (ILO) shows that flexible working models increase women’s participation in working life in particular.

For that reason many companies are putting the following in place:

Hybrid working models

Extended parental leave

Career return programmes

Employee experience surveys

These policies build a more sustainable work culture for everyone, not only for women.

In summary…

Stronger representation of women at work is not only a social goal. It is also a critical element in building stronger, more sustainable and more innovative organisations.

Transparent pay policies, objective career development processes and flexible working models are becoming the building blocks of modern HR management.

The 8th of March we left behind yesterday was an important day to revisit the subject. But real change happens when organisations reflect this approach in their processes every day of the year.

A working life that offers more inclusive and equal opportunities remains a strong investment — not only for employees, but for the long-term success of organisations.

See you next week with new topics. 🌞

Hello, We left International Women’s Day behind yesterday.
